Spring in Northern Vermont starts when the spring peepers come out of the woods and have orgies in our ponds. The first batch of frogs are actually croakers up here: they sound like a herd of geese when all 100 of them are vocalizing. The first videos show them swimming and croaking. I crept out to the pond, and they fell silent. I then waited until they started croaking again, and filmed them while I sat on a rock.

In a few of the videos, you can actually see the air bladders on their backs inflate as they make the croaking sound. The ripples that they make when swimming and croaking are big: you can spot the frogs from 100 feet away just from the ripples. The meniscus around them can cause some interesting visual artifacts: note the “bottles” that appear under their eyes. These are reflections of their eyes in the surface of the water, on the meniscus. Note that some of the videos are in slow motion, and lack audio.

A few hours later, I glanced up at the pond, and saw a mink/ferret swimming in the pond. It was clear what s/he was after: peepers! I grabbed my camera and tried to film the ferret at work. The routine became clear quickly. S/he would swim in the pond until she encountered a frog, take it, swim to shore, and then run to a den under a big rock. This repeated at least a dozen times, leading me to believe that she was feeding babies, since she took far more than she could eat. I had to shoot these videos from inside, so no outdoor natural sounds, just the sound of my African Grays.

I became annoyed that she was taking so many of them, and walked out, partly to stop the carnage … I mean nature … and partly to see how shy the ferret was. S/he was not terrified, looking at me as I walked up, but then went to ground. I stood there for perhaps 10 minutes, and s/he stuck her head out once to check on me, but I was not patient enough to get a close-up of her.
